Blended learning allows you to custom-create a class timetable that includes both online and on-campus classes, so you can experience the best of both worlds in the way that suits your schedule, lifestyle and learning needs. International students can study up to 25% of their course online.

This approach is ideal for students juggling study with work and/or family commitments, or those simply seeking a mixture of stimulating face-to-face classes as well as independent study undertaken online.

Classes are attended via the JNI Online Learning Portal, a user-friendly and visually engaging website that you can access anywhere, anytime with an Internet connection. Our online lecturers will guide you through the program and your learning with one-on-one feedback on assessments and examinations, and you can then experience the vibrant campus environment and get to know other students and teaching staff through our small in-person classes when you come to campus.

Online learning can offer the flexibility you may need to balance your study commitments with your lifestyle and location. Through online study, you can complete most of Jansen Newman Institute counselling courses and social work courses from anywhere in the country. Completing more than 25% of a JNI course online is an option only available to Australian students.

Here what another student has to say about online study.

JNI’s approach to digital learning combines high-quality study materials with online support from our staff. You’ll be guided through the curriculum and your learning journey, while allowing for independent study. The qualification you receive as an online student is exactly the same as that gained through on-campus study.

Students completing course components online also attend compulsory workshops in person ranging from two to five days. Here you’ll meet lecturers and fellow students and gain the experience and confidence to work effectively as a counsellor, therapist or community service worker.

Our online study options offer:

  • Responsive one-on-one, personalised tutorial support
  • Facilitated communication between students, academics and support staff
  • Participation in group activities, discussion forums, message boards and blogs
  • Subject study guides, relevant textbooks and reference materials
  • Online self-review quizzes to help you monitor your own progress and receive immediate feedback from staff
  • Access to the online library collection
  • Collaborative resources shared through RSS feeds, online library collections, databases and an e-portfolio
  • High-quality curriculum and learning materials, including our state-of-the-art Online Learning Portal

JNI’s Online Learning Portal is a digital extension of our library and educational services. Through the portal you will have 24-hour access to our databases, online catalogue and extensive list of books and online videos. On the portal you’ll also find a range of regularly updated resources to support your studies, such as assignment cover sheets, client consent forms, and ongoing course information.

“I was on campus but still used online stuff, it was great to be able to go back and look at bits that I'd missed in class. Or often if we got into discussion in class, not all the powerpoints were covered so you could do them in your own time. I work 4 days a week and being able to go to class in the evening and study whilst also still earning was a massive attraction to the course. It works really well for me.

"My favourite part of the JNI experience was finding other people as passionate about learning and helping people to talk to and discuss things with. I love learning and this has been such a positive experience."

Andrea's typical study schedule (in a trimester in which she is enrolled in 1 subject):

  • Time on campus:
  • At home online study:
  • Study support:
  • 3 hours per week
  • approximately 7 hours a week
  • learning portal discussion forums approximately 30 mins-1 hour per week but did not use every week

We recognise that each student has an individual way of learning and individual study needs. With most of our courses, you have the option of studying full-time or part-time, on-campus or online - or a combination of both (known as blended learning). This versatile approach to designing your class schedule means you can study anytime, anywhere, in the way that best suits you; transforming your career at your own pace.

I’ve worked with so many young people who are at the end of their tether, and to be able to offer them a service and see them restored with their families and to see their faces and how appreciative they are, that someone walked this journey with them, that is absolutely incredible. Everyone can change the world, I think that is absolutely true.
