Our team
Jansen Newman Institute lecturers are experienced practitioners engaged in clinical work and they bring the real world of the counsellor and psychotherapist to classroom training and clinical learning.
At Jansen Newman we believe students should receive support in both the academic and personal aspects of their study.
Our Student Support Coordinator and the Academic and Administration teams are on hand to assist students in all aspects of learning, including the use of video and audio equipment in the clinic, arranging bookings and allocating rooms for client sessions.
Our Academic Staff

A number of our lecturers are published authors and have national and international reputations in their specialised fields.
Margaret Appleby OAM B Ed, Dip Teaching
Margaret is a pioneer in the area of prevention of suicide in Australia. Founding member of Suicide Prevention Australia. Consultant with Rose Education. Margaret has been a faculty member for many years.
Margaret Berkovic MAASW, MNSWIPP, APS
Margaret has been practising, teaching and supervising in Sydney for 35 years. She is a Training Analyst with the APA and is a founding member and past president of the NSW Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. She lectures at New South Wales University. Margaret has been on the faculty since 1999.
Paul Bogacs BA Theology, MSc Marriage & Family Therapy
Paul works with individuals, couples and families. He teaches in the areas of Family and Couples Therapy, Depression, Anxiety Disorders and CBT. Paul has recently moved from being Manager of the Salvation Army Counselling Service to working in the field of School Counselling. He is a member of the executive committee of the Society of Counselling and Psychotherapy Educators (SCAPE) and past editor of the society’s newsletter.
Adrian van den Bok MA (CulPsych-Narrative Studies), DipPsychotherapy/RelCouns, Cert Internship
As a Clinical Supervisor/Educator and Psychotherapist/Counsellor, Adrian works with individuals and couples experiencing persistent problems and/or at critical moments in their lives. He also lectures and conducts group supervision classes and individual supervision for Intern Clinic students.
John Butters MAPsS, BA (Psych), PG Dip Psych, Adv Dip Psychotherapy (ICP)
John is a Psychologist/Psychotherapist. For the last six years he has been practising as an individual psychotherapist and for the last 4 years working in psychiatric hospitals as a psychologist (group and individual counsellor). John is currently working with people struggling with self-harm and emotional disorders at St John of God Private Hospital, Burwood and completing post graduate studies at Macquarie University.
Brian Cade BA, Cert Soc Work
Brian is a Family Therapist and registered as a Psychotherapist in the UK. He has presented at numerous international conferences and workshops. Brian is primary author of the book “A Brief Guide to Brief Therapy”. For over 30 years, he has been developing the use of ‘brief’ and ‘solution-focused’ approaches.
Janice Cade MApp Sci (Crit Psych), BAd Ed, Adv Dip of App Soc Sci, CMCAPA
Janice works as a therapist in private practice. She has an extensive background in conducting change management programs for international companies. At Jansen Newman Janice teaches a range of subjects including counselling, personality development and personality disorders, mental health issues, psychodynamic theory, cultural anthropology and human development. Janice is the Student Support Coordinator at Jansen Newman.
Elizabeth Crichton BAppSc(OT), ARMIT, CM (ITAA & WPATA), EMDR 1 & 2, EFT
Elizabeth is a Diagnostic Radiographer, Occupational Therapist, Transactional Analyst and Psychotherapist. She currently works in private practice with individuals, couples and children. In the Academic program she teaches Transactional Analysis, a subject she has been teaching and practising for 17 years. In her practice she uses TA as well as EMDR, EFT, Art Therapy, and Inner Child work.
Eileen Davis BA (Psych), MA (Psych), MA (Educ), Dip CH, Cert Teaching, MAPS, Registered Psychologist
Eileen is an Educator, Clinical Practitioner and Hypnotherapist. She has been involved in education and psychology for over 30 years. She is Academic Director at Jansen Newman, lectures on Counselling Skills, Qualitative Research and Hypnotherapy and is the Secretary of the Society of Counselling and Psychotherapy Educators (SCAPE).
Oisín Friel RN, Grad Dip Health Sc (Drug & Alcohol)
Oisín is the Nursing Unit Manager at Ryde Drug and Alcohol Service. He has 20 years experience in the UK and Australia in the Drug and Alcohol field. He has taught addictive disorders at Jansen Newman since 1996.
Barbara Jones PG Dip in Comms Mgmt, PG Dip Psychotherapy
Barbara works for an international consulting organisation where she manages the organisational change unit. As part of this role, she coaches senior executives, and leads client management teams through human change processes. Barbara lectures in change managment and coaching.
Dr Penny Jools PhD Child Develop, MA ClinPsych
Penny worked for 8 years at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children as a Clinical Psychologist as well as teaching clinical and developmental courses at Macquarie University. For the past 10 years she has been in private practice in Annandale working with adults, children and families.
Robyn Lamb B Soc Stud
Robyn is Deputy Head of the Child Protection Unit at The Children’s Hospital, Westmead. She has taught child sexual abuse at JNI since 1997.
Randi Leighton MCouns, Grad Dip Couns, CertIV A&WT, EMDR1, St Johns Hong Kong Couns Cert, MCAPA
Randi has significant experience working with adults and children, as individuals and in groups, for trauma, loss, crisis, disorders and concurrent complex issues. She volunteers for the Homicide Victims Support Group and has a private practice. She has held various positions in corporate education and administration in Australia and Asia. Randi is on CAPA’s Ethics Committee.
Mary McGuiness M Ed, BA (Psych), Dip Couns, Dip Teaching
Mary has 19 years experience in MBTI Accreditation as well as consulting to organisations and educators. Mary served as National President of the Australian Association of Psychological Type (1993-4) and as President of the Sydney Chapter (1991-6). Mary has published a successful book called “You’ve Got Personality”. Mary teaches one of the personality strands in the academic program.
Adam McLean BCHC, Grad Dip Couns/Psychotherapy, BN, CM, CertIV A&WAT, MCAPA, RN
Adam has over 20 years experience in the health and community sector, is responsible for the development of innovative support and counselling programs within a leading NGO and is currently studying for a Master’s in Counselling. Adam is a Therapist and Group Therapy Facilitator.
Shushann Movsessian Dip Teach, MAppSci, Dip Process Oriented Psychology, CertIVW&AT, Certified REACH, CMCAPA
Shushann is a psychotherapist, educator and author. She is an experienced facilitator in effective communication, conflict transformation, counselling skills and cross cultural awareness. She also runs workshops for pre-teen and teenage girls, parents, educators, therapists and health practitioners on developmental, body image, conflict and self esteem issues.
Nerida Oberg BCouns, Dip Psychotherapy/Couns, Dip Prof Couns
Nerida’s relationship with JNI began over a decade ago. Since that time she has trained extensively in the field of psychotherapy and counselling whilst working as a Couples and Family therapist. Nerida is a Group Therapist at Jansen Newman.
Philip Oldfield BA, Accredited Gestalt Therapist and Trainer
In his private practice Philip works extensively with individuals and couples. Philip has taught Same Sex Relationships in the Jansen Newman program since 1998.
Dr Margo Orum PhD, BA Comm, BA Psych(Hons), Ass MAPS
Margo is a Psychologist in part-time private practice. She is an author and part-time lecturer at Macquarie University. At Jansen Newman she lectures on psychosis (raising awareness about counselling and management of people with psychotic illness).
Doreen Patenall BCHC
Doreen, a graduate of Jansen Newman, is a Group and Individual Student Supervisor and practising as an Individual and Couple Therapist. Doreen has a keen interest in Sandplay and Dreamwork and uses these modalities in her work.
Gail Pemberton M (Counselling), Grad Dip Couns & Psychotherapy, MCAPA, PACFA (reg.)
Gail is a Psychotherapist, Counsellor, Supervisor and Hypnotherapist. In the academic program she is a Supervisor, Group Therapist and facilitates the Sandplay Therapy short course. Gail has run groups for the Department of Corrective Services and Relationships Australia. She has specialist knowledge in conflict resolution, anger management, drug and alcohol abuse as well as domestic violence and sexual abuse.
Clinton Power BMUS, Grad Dip Mus, Grad Dip Couns/Psych, II Gestalt Therapy
Clinton was a classical musician for over 15 years before commencing his training in counselling and psychotherapy, specialising in couples under the supervision of David Jansen and Margaret Newman. He works with individuals, couples and families at Relationships Australia and has experience in child and adolescent education and the drug and alcohol fields. Clinton is a Group Therapist at Jansen Newman.
Dr Michael Reed BSW, MSW, PhD
Michael is a Registered Psychologist and Accredited Social Worker. He is Co-director of ‘Gestalt Practitioners Training Sydney’ and a visiting faculty member of several training institutes across Australia. Michael has taught in the areas of Gestalt Therapy, Human Development (Adolescence), Couples Therapy and Ethics since the early 1990s. Michael is in private practice in Sydney.
Gaye Stockell MA, MAPS (Psychologist)
Gaye has been involved in presenting Narrative Therapy Workshops in many parts of Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. She is also a lecturer at the University of Western Sydney. Working in private practice, Gaye meets with individuals, couples and families and provides individual, group and agency supervision.

Helen is the CEO and a Director of Jansen Newman. She is involved in the training and supervision of students. Helen also has a clinical practice at the Jansen Newman Institue working with individuals, couples, families and children.
Caryn Walsh MCouns, GDCouns, BA (Comm/Psych) DipPublicRelations &Comm, CertIVW&AT, MCAPA
Caryn lectures in Organisational Behaviour, Counselling Adult Survivors of Sexual Abuse, Domestic Violence and Gender and Power. She also runs her own private practice. Her facilitation, training and organisational experience spans all areas of team and leadership development.

Lenore is the Managing Director of Mind Advantage, a company that facilitates enriching and empowering change for organisations and individuals.
