JNI counsellors will guide you through your life transitions and provide you with powerful strategies and coping mechanisms to help you manage the challenges you are currently facing. Our goal is to work with you to seek solutions and change. The Jansen Newman Institute was established in 1978 and has an excellent reputation for providing training in counselling and psychotherapy and our Community Clinic forms an intrinsic part of the education experience for our students.

Who should you see?

Many of our clients choose to meet with a student intern - enthusiastic and committed students who are studying to become counsellors. These sessions are supervised by expert counsellors and therapists (typically JNI lecturers) and like any counselling session, confidentiality is respected.

One major benefit of sessions with our interns is that the consultation costs are much lower than you'll find elsewhere. If you are new to counselling, this is a perfect way to see whether you like it with a minimal financial commitment. Further, many of our clients who meet with our interns comment on the satisfaction they get from knowing that they are contributing to the training of student counsellors.

What are some of the areas JNI counsellors specialise in?

  • Stress
  • Dealing with conflict
  • Work/life balance
  • Family relationships
  • Anxiety
  • Assertiveness/self-esteem issues.

Of course, our clinic also has a range of fully qualified, experienced counsellors and therapists available if you prefer this option. This is a more expensive option than meeting with a student intern but still considerably less than what other counsellors/practices typically charge. Our counsellors are fully qualified to deal with issues around depression, addiction, grief, marriage and couples counselling, phobias, sexual abuse and eating disorders, amongst other things.
